Constructed in 1882 on the northern shores of Brac island, the St Nicholas Lighthouse stands as a testament to the centuries-old stone building tradition. However, its construction was not undertaken by locals but rather by Austrians, as part of their mission to enhance maritime safety along the Adriatic coast.
Comprising a fourth stone tower and a ground floor residence where the lighthouse keeper and his family once resided, the structure has undergone modernization, now being powered by solar modules and automated. Despite these updates, the lighthouse retains much of its original charm.
Positioned strategically on the central stretch of Brac's northern coastline, above the western point of Pucisca Bay, its location was chosen due to its proximity to the Brac quarry across the bay. A road was constructed from Pucisca settlement to the lighthouse site, which remains remarkably preserved to this day. Beyond the lighthouse lies only a seaway, leading to several secluded coves.
With its low square stone tower featuring a gallery and a small turret, the St. Nicholas light serves as a crucial beacon, especially during inclement weather. Despite advances in navigation technology, it continues to play a vital role in ensuring the safety of sailors navigating the eastern Adriatic.
Having undergone a full renovation in 2019, the St Nicholas Lighthouse now offers accommodation for up to 4+2 guests across its 70 square metres of space. Original features such as wooden beams and traditional architectural elements lend an air of authenticity to the interior. The lighthouse boasts two bedrooms with king-size beds and a modern bathroom with a unique glass wall connection to one of the bedrooms.
The Mediterranean-style kitchen is fully equipped with modern amenities, carefully selected to complement the historic ambiance. A dining area situated within the confines of the lighthouse compound offers a picturesque setting under the open sky or starlit nights, while a jacuzzi provides a luxurious touch for guests to enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
