A valid passport and a return ticket are required to enter Costa Rica. Travelers from countries outside the US, Canada, and the EU may need an additional visa to enter.
Most travelers will fly into Tamarindo. The closest airport to Tamarindo is Daniel Obuder Quirós International Airport in Liberia. From there, it’s about an hour’s drive into Tamarindo. You can also fly into Juan Santamarìa International Airport (SJO) in San Jose and drive 4-5 hours to Tamarindo, or take a small, local flight. Getting around Tamarindo is relatively straightforward. The town itself is fairly compact, so you can reach most restaurants, shops, and beaches on foot. Many also choose to rent a bike or a golf cart to get around, and you can rent a car if you want to get around and explore more of the adjacent area. Peak season in Tamarindo is from December to April. The weather is warm, sunny, and clear, and the surfing conditions are optimal. This is also when you’ll find the highest crowds, however.
Shoulder season is in May and November. The weather and surfing are still great, but there are fewer crowds and lower prices. For many, this is the best time to visit.
Low season is June to October. This is the rainy season, with showers occurring regularly, especially in the afternoon. Still, this is a great time for rafting and the rainforest is lush for hikes. It’s also a good time for experienced surfers.
Tamarindo is considered safe. However, as it is a popular tourist spot, it is wise to exercise common sense, like keeping valuables secure and avoiding walking alone in the dark. Currents can also be strong, so be sure to swim in designated areas only.
Go surfing: Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced surfer, Tamarindo has something to offer you. There are plenty of surf rentals and shops all along the beach, and the surf culture is some of the best anywhere.
Beach hop: While Tamarindo is home to its own beautiful beach, there are plenty of nearby coastal gems as well. Playa Langosta offers a quiet, relaxed vibe, while Playa Grande lets you watch nesting leatherback turtles in season.
Take a boat tour: There are some truly unique boat tours around Tamarindo. Great options include a snorkeling tour to Catalina Islands, where you might find rays, sharks, and tropical fish, as well as an estuary boat tour around the Tamarindo Wildlife Refuge to see crocodiles, monkeys, and a variety of birds.
Tamarindo is home to a delightful mix of cuisines, from traditional Costa Rican food to international dishes. There’s a big emphasis on fresh seafood, and restaurants often serve a catch of the day including red snapper, mahi-mahi, or tuna. There are also plenty of international offerings, as well as vegetarian and vegan options. Tamarindo has a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons.
Dry season is from December to April. The weather is clear and sunny, with very little rainfall. Daytime highs are around 86°F to 96°F (30°C to 35°C), and nighttime lows are around 71°F to 75°F (22°C to 24°C). Average precipitation is minimal, often less than 1 inch (25 mm) per month.
Green season is from May to November. This season sees more rainfall, especially in the afternoon. Average daytime highs are around 82°F to 90°F (28°C to 32°C), with nighttime lows around 71°F to 75°F (22°C to 24°C). Average precipitation peaks in September and October - monthly averages can range from 8 to 12 inches (200 to 300 mm) during these wetter months.
