A valid passport is required to enter the Bahamas from the US, Canada, and the EU. Visitors from outside the US may also need to present a valid return ticket at customs.
While the Bahamas has over 20 international airports, most visitors will likely land in Nassau International Airport. From there, it's easy to catch a local connecting flight to one of the outer islands.
Air is the quickest way to get around the Bahamas, and a flight from Nassau to the Exumas will take about 40 minutes. Alternatively, an overnight ferry connects Nassau and the Exumas, and takes about 14 hours. A fast ferry is also available which takes 2.5 hours, and you can arrange a private speed boat which will make the trip in about 90 minutes.
Similarly, reaching Eleuthera (and Governor's Island) is a 20-minute flight from Nassau, or a 2.5-hour ferry.
Many suggest visiting the Bahamas during peak season (mid-December to mid-April), since this is when you'll get to enjoy the best weather, including balmy average temperatures hovering near 87°F (31°C), especially if you travel closer to April.
That said, many favor the shoulder season (November-December and April- July) thanks to its better deals and smaller crowds. While you have a higher chance of rain at this time, it is mostly relegated to scattered showers in the afternoons. April-July will also see warmer temperatures.
The rainiest time is from August-October, which is also the height of hurricane season. While your chances of encountering an actual hurricane are quite low, you run a higher risk of getting rained out during this time. Go on a powerboat tour: There are so many beautiful cays and islets around the Bahamas, and the best way to see as many of them as possible is with a powerboat tour. Plus, many tour operators offer extras like lunch, water sports, and snorkeling.
Snorkeling and diving: On that note, the Bahamas is home to some great snorkeling and diving, especially around the Exumas. The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park is particularly impressive, as it covers over 176 square miles and features blue holes, caves, undersea drop offs, the Thunderball Grotto (made famous by the film), and more.
Go fishing: The Bahamas is also home to some great sports-fishing, including some of the best deep-sea fishing and bone fishing in the world. Here you can find those iconic white and blue marlins, as well as snappers, groupers, permit, tuna, mahi mahi, and more.
Bahamian cuisine is a delicious mix of influences from the Caribbean and the American South. Seafood is central thanks to its abundant freshness, and conch fritters are widely considered the national dish. Rock lobster is another favorite, as is snapper, grouper, mahi mahi, and other fresh fish locally caught.
Popular side dishes include rice n' peas, baked macaroni and cheese, potato salad, cole slaw, and johnny cakes.

While there's plenty of that warm, sunny weather that the Caribbean is known for, the Bahamas is generally cooler than other Caribbean destinations thanks to the trade winds that surround its many islands, as well as its more northern location.
Average temperatures range from 85°F (27°C) to 87°F (31°C) in the summer and 70°F (21°C) to 78°F (27°C) in the winter. Evenings especially can be cooler, often with a refreshing ocean breeze.
The chance of rainfall also increases during the wet season from June-November, with October and June being the two wettest months. That said, the island enjoys over 300 days of sunshine, and generally most rainfall occurs in the form of scattered showers in the evening.
