With its 365 beaches, Antigua is one of the most laid-back islands in the Caribbean. And while travellers often have a hard time picking a favorite, choosing your seashore of choice probably won’t take too long if you’re staying in one of these luxury villas on the beach in Antigua. Or maybe it will since these villas have multiple beaches too.
Why Travel to Antigua?
Just southeast of USVI, St Barts, and St Martin, Antigua is nestled along the eastern edge of the Leeward Islands. That means it benefits from great weather, gorgeous landscapes, and some of the best sailing conditions in the whole Caribbean.
In fact, sailing has long been a part of Antiguan history, and the island is home to the oldest dockyard in the western hemisphere – Nathan’s Dockyard. A UNESCO Heritage Site, it’s one of Antigua’s biggest tourist attractions and offers visitors the chance to experience an 18th-century British base, as well as learn more about Antigua’s rich – and sometimes difficult – history.
Right alongside Nathan’s Dockyard, you’ll find everything from mega yachts to small schooners lined up along English Harbor. Boating is a big deal in Antigua, and its Regatta at the end of April and beginning of May is right up there with the best in the Caribbean.
To get the best views of the ships and English Harbor, visit Shirley Heights, a former military lookout and battery 490 feet high. Its lookout is where those iconic Antigua photos of the harbour are taken. It’s also home to a Sunday night BBQ party that’s always a big hit with tourists and locals alike.
Further west, you’ll find Jolly Harbor, a marina and development with a beautiful mix of sandy beaches, great views of St. Kitts and Nevis, and rows upon rows of catamarans, yachts, and power boats. It’s also home to an 18-hole championship golf course.
Antigua is also surrounded by coral reefs, tropical fish, and – no surprise, given its history – shipwrecks. All this makes for some of the best snorkelling in the Caribbean, at least outside the ABC islands. And as you can imagine, there’s no shortage of boat tours available for scuba diving, deep sea fishing, wakeboarding, parasailing, and all other manners of water sports.
Luxury Villas on the Beach
While the mix of history, culture, and good vibes is a big part of Antigua’s charm, we can’t forget the beaches. Beaches in Antigua are public by law, so for the ultimate in private beach luxury, you need to head to Jumby Bay, a private island off the northeast coast.
Delphis
Located along multiple private beaches within the ultra-exclusive Jumby Island, Delphis offers guests their own 500 meters of pristine coastline, as well as their own boat dock and multiple suites set out across five acres of lush, beautifully-landscaped property.
Imagine your own private peninsula resort, with five separate sleeping pavilions connected by wooden walkways snaking through mangroves and tropical flowers. As you walk through them, you pass different nooks that lead to picturesque cliffs overlooking the ocean, as well as not one but two infinity pools. At the edge of the property is The Lookout, where your group gets together to enjoy drinks by the neon-lit bar or a meal at the dining table or beside the firepit, all served by your private staff and prepared by your private chef.
And that’s just the exterior. The interior is designed to evoke a sense of health and vitality, and its five suites are uniquely and richly appointed to that end. Each is named and themed after a different Greek divinity and has its own little surprises, whether it’s an outdoor bathtub, a lanai shower, or an island terrace just outside the bedroom. It’s those kinds of details that give Delphis its soul, and its layout gives it the potential to create the ultimate villa experience for any group.
Turtle Reef Estate
Nestled within a private cove consisting of two beaches, the 4-bedroom Turtle Reef Estate makes for a perfect family hideaway. Its pavilions are separated by utility, with a living pavilion for entertaining featuring large terraces, a modern kitchen, and a multimedia room, as well as a bedroom pavilion with four well-appointed ocean-view bedrooms.
All throughout, Turtle Reef estate is decorated with local art, which contrasts beautifully with the simple elegance of the architecture itself. The interiors are also spacious and breezy, opening to the lush tropical landscaping and breathtaking views that surround the villa.
Punctuating the experience is the oceanfront infinity pool, which offers even more magnificent views that extend to the sea’s horizon from the villa’s private cove. It must be one of the best pool views in the whole of Antigua, especially while sipping a freshly made cocktail.
La Casa Estate
My personal favorite on this list, La Casa Estate has the kind of Classical elegance and sophisticated detail that you usually only find in Europe.
A British Colonial-style estate, its design perfectly contrasts with the tropical landscape, large infinity pool, and private beach out front, creating a distinct impression of luxury as its columns shimmer in the reflection of the water.
The interior includes fine touches like a drawing room, a rich library with wood-vaulted ceilings and a custom spiral staircase, as well as lovely engravings and inspired artwork all throughout. As if that wasn’t charming enough, there’s even a private croquet yard, elegantly overlooking those majestic ocean views.
